Since 1964 Syb had been working as a photographer. He studied photography at the American "Famous Photographers Course". Until 1972 he earned a living as a photographer and musician. He studied history and Dutch in Leiden and Groningen. From 1973 until his retirement, he worked as a history and Dutch teacher at various secondary schools and was a drummer in various bands. In addition, he continued to photograph.

After his retirement, he began to paint in an abstract expressionist style. He is self-taught as a painter and his examples are: Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, the Cobra painters and Joan Mitchell, but also in his immediate surroundings he was inspired by painters such as Gerriet Postma and Bep Mulder. In 2007 and 2009 he attended a masterclass with Mulder.

He often tries to isolate details of rusty and dilapidated objects in his photographs, but he also looks for abstract motifs in nature.
